School Districts Strive to Make Wholesome Food a National Standard

Preparing meals in L.A. UnifiedSchool districts in Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, Miami, New York and Orlando, Florida have formed an alliance with the goal of making wholesome food a national standard, possibly marking the biggest step yet to transform school meals.

The Los Angeles Times article discusses, as diet-related maladies such as diabetes and obesity increase among children, the quest to reduce fat, sugar and sodium in school meals has gained new urgency within school districts. Many have already made changes in their menus, including more whole grains and fresh produce. Now, by joining forces, these districts hope to move the market and eventually enlist other school districts in the crusade.
