Community Comes Together to Build a Greener Block

A couple of friends recently decided to create a group where ordinary people could come together and talk about how they could make Las Vegas more sustainable and create a greener community. At the first meeting there were 6 people, at the second there were 18, and less than 8 weeks after the group first met, 60 people showed up. There were local farmers, teachers, techies, old and young, of every color and creed. And out of these gatherings, the idea was hatched to Build a Greener Block.

Instead of empty stores there will be a restaurant offering healthy food, a boutique, café, and a flower shop. There will be a dog park and fitness classes, yoga, and an obstacle course for kids.

The streets will be lined with food stands and local farmers selling their vegetables. There will be classes for the whole family from gardening and canning to learning how to make your own recycled musical instrument. There will also be plenty of entertainment – bands, street performers, comedians – you name it. And they are doing it in the most sustainable way possible including using solar power and biodegradable utensils. Everything will be recycled and upcycled. Continue reading
