Kelly Chapman Meyer, passionate environmentalist and health advocate, is a Trustee of the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) where she recently organized NRDC’s “Making Peace with the Ocean” with her co-chairs, which raised over $3 million to celebrate and raise awareness for our oceans. As co-founder of the Women’s Cancer Research Fund, a program of the Entertainment Industry Foundation, she has helped raise over $40 million for ground breaking Bio-Marker research and medical institutions.

She most recently co-founded the American Heart Association’s “Teaching Gardens,” which strives to eliminate childhood obesity by integrating nutrition and fitness into schools. Meyer is currently focused on launching and expanding Teaching Gardens into 1,000 schools within the next two years. Her goal is to introduce organic gardening along with a nutritional curriculum and connection to fitness; the hope is to re-establish what it means to be healthy for the next generation.

Meyer received the Huffington Post Game Changer Award in October 2011 for her dedication towards Teaching Gardens. She was recently appointed by Secretary Solis to The Advisory Committee on Veterans’ Employment, Training and Employer Outreach (ACVETEO) and was featured in Oprah’s O Magazine on her “2010 O Power List,” which recognized 20 women and their outstanding contributions to society. She is a board member of Heal the Bay and worked to help pass the Environmental Education Initiative, which provides environmental education for all children in the state of California, K – 12. In 2008, she partnered to build the first LEED Platinum home in California that was used to educate the public on Green building and raise money for environmental causes. She recently supported the implementation of the Marine Life Preserve Area (MLPA) off the coast of Southern California.

A strong supporter of the public school system, she was president of the PTA at Point Dume Marine Science School in Malibu. She recently completed a solar and wind energy project at her children’s public elementary school where the community experienced first-hand the concept of thinking globally while acting locally. This project was the impetus for all schools in the Santa Monica Unified School District to install solar panels.

A true outdoorswoman, she is an avid surfer, stand up paddler, yoga devotee, tri-athlete and hiker. She is the mother of two, Carson and Eli, and wife of Ron Meyer, President and COO of Universal Studios.

Corporate Responsibility Award:
Elon Musk

Jeff Skoll & Elon Musk

Elon Musk is the CEO and Product Architect of Tesla Motors and the CEO/CTO of Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX).

At SpaceX, Elon is the chief designer, overseeing development of rockets and spacecraft for missions to Earth orbit and ultimately to other planets. In 2008, SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket and Dragon spacecraft won the NASA contract to provide a commercial replacement for the cargo transport function of the Space Shuttle, which retired in 2011. The SpaceX Falcon 1 was the first privately developed liquid fuel rocket to reach orbit. In 2010, SpaceX became the first commercial company to successfully recover a spacecraft from Earth orbit with its Dragon spacecraft. In 2012, SpaceX became the first commercial company to dock with the International Space Station and return cargo to Earth with the Dragon.

At Tesla, Elon has overseen product development and design from the beginning, including the all electric Tesla Roadster, Model S and Model X. Transitioning to a sustainable energy economy, in which electric vehicles play a pivotal role, has been one of his central interests for almost two decades, stemming from his time as a physics student working on ultracapacitors in Silicon Valley.

In addition, Elon is the non-executive chairman and principal shareholder of SolarCity, which he helped create. SolarCity is now the leading provider of solar power systems in the United States.
