186th Street Elementary School

Back to Schools List

186th Street School is a School-Based Management/LEARN school. Parents have an important role in partnership with the school to ensure the success of all children. Through EMA’s partnership with Toyota USA we have been able to provide support to 186th Street School’s Children’s Garden.

The school is home to a community garden that is open to neighbors in the area. Growing in the garden is a shady avocado tree, fava beans, artichokes and strawberries to name a few. During Earth Month the students planted a white blossom cherry tree in the courtyard with their mentor, Malin Akerman.

In April of 2012, the school was visited by another garden mentor, Lance Bass. Lance toured the school, took photos, helped make potpourri, planted some rose bushes and harvested lettuce that was then cut up into a giant salad and enjoyed by all.

Lance returned to the garden for a visit in early 2013 along with Malin Akerman. The two had a great time harvesting with students and enjoyed seeing how much had grown since their last visit.
