The EMA Awards

The annual EMA Awards honor film and television personalities, productions, musicians and musical tours that convey environmental messages in the most creative and influential ways.

Introduction to the EMA Awards

Since 1991, the EMA Awards has been the only program solely devoted to celebrating the entertainment industry’s environmental efforts. A pioneer in linking the power of celebrity to environmental awareness, it was EMA who invented the ‘green carpet,’ launching the concept of taking a hybrid or alternative fuel vehicle – not a limo – to our annual Awards show.

The Power of Entertainment, Put to Planetary Use

Producers, directors, actors, writers, musicians and celebrities nominated for an EMA Award share a passion for the environment. From serious documentary filmmakers to pop culture producers to socially conscious musicians and paparazzi-prone celebrities, they recognize the huge influence entertainment wields the public and use it to spread environmental awareness in ways both subtle and strong.

Environmentalism: The New Norm

In 2006, environmentalism achieved a tipping point.

Between the impact of Al Gore’s documentary, An Inconvenient Truth, and a series of natural disasters, environmentalism went from being the work of activists to an every day concern for regular people. Now more than ever, people are talking – and doing something - about the environment. Conserving energy, buying locally and simply thinking more about consumerism overall are some ways people are going green.

With momentum like this, it’s vital to keep environmental awareness top of mind, and the star-studded EMA Awards does this with singular style.  Although we’ve been honoring the entertainment industry’s unique ability to influence millions for almost 20 years, we are thrilled to be a part of the environment’s recent “makeover,” en route to one venerable aspiration: to create a healthier world.

EMA Award Categories

Each fall, the EMA Awards are presented in the following categories:

  • Feature Film
  • Television Episodic Comedy
  • Television Episodic Drama
  • Reality Primetime Program
  • Children's Animated Program
  • Children's Live Action TV Program
  • Documentary

  • EMA Awards: What We’re Looking for

Whether it’s a single beat in a half-hour television comedy (a blue recyclable bin used in the family kitchen) or as elaborate as the story line for an entire feature film (The Simpsons Movie dealing with the consequences Homer faces after polluting a lake). As long as the work clearly delivers an environmental message in some way, EMA considers it “environmental” and urges you to submit it for consideration.

    Special Honors for Entertainment Industry

In addition to category-specific EMA Awards, special honors are given to people in the entertainment industry who have gone above and beyond to help the environment both professionally and personally. Past honorees include Keely and Pierce Brosnan, Jayni and Chevy Chase, Blythe Danner, Dave Matthews Band, Daryl Hannah, Maroon5, Alanis Morissette, Willie Nelson, Edward Norton, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rob Reiner and John Travolta.

    The EMA Awards Gala

The party held after the EMA Awards Ceremony is unlike any other Hollywood event in that we merge culinary excellence with organic responsibility. The Gala is a showcase for all things green – from the organic food and beverages served on chinaware (not paper or plastic!) to an environmentally themed Silent Auction to the use of reusable cloth banners and signs. All print materials are printed on 100% recycled chlorine free paper with soy-based ink. And, of course, everything possible is recycled.

    The Chefs

Each year, EMA is honored to have many of the top chefs in Los Angeles cater our incredibly delicious organic dinner including Ben Ford (Ford’s Filling Station); Ann Gentry (Real Food Daily); Joe Miller (Joe’s); Mary Sue Milliken and Susan Feniger (Border Grill and Ciudad); Mark Peel (Campanile); Louis Pechan (The Ebell of Los Angeles), Donna Prizgintas; Akasha Richmond (Akasha) and Suzanne Tracht (Jar).

    Why Organic?

Besides tasting and looking great, organic products promote a less toxic environment for everyone. Certified Organic products are produced without GMO’s (genetically modified organisms), which are prohibited in the standards for organic food and farming. Organic agriculture is one way to prevent chemicals from getting into our air and water systems. Organic farming practices encourage ecological harmony and environmental responsibility; organic farmers maintain a biologically sustainable investment in our future. Why organic? For so many reasons, including the health of our families and our planet.

    CALL FOR ENTRIES 2010…
