In 2010, actor and environmentalist, Ian Somerhalder, launched The Ian Somerhalder Foundation, which aims to educate, empower and collaborate with people and projects who positively impact our planet and its creatures. Through his role as founder and president, Somerhalder strives to create awareness for environmental and animal rights related issues, focusing specifically on the environment, creatures and clean energy initiatives.
In 2011, ISF co-partnered with the Alliance for Global Conservation to create Planet Green’s “Blue August,” a week-long series that explored the wonders of the ocean and aquatic life. Ian served as an online and on-camera guide for the documentary and traveled to Trinidad and Tobago to film the life cycle of sea turtles. Currently, ISF is working on developing its own Animal Sanctuary dedicated to misfit and outcast pets, as well as other animals.
Earlier this year, Somerhalder was awarded with the Humane Society of America’s prestigious Wyler Award for his work with animals.
Jessica Alba is actively involved with charities such as Safer Chemicals Healthy Families, ONE, Habitat for Humanity, Project HOME and more. She recently cofounded The Honest Company with Christopher Gavigan, former CEO of Healthy Child Healthy World, and the author of the book by the same name. The company aims to distribute safe, non-toxic baby products for parents looking to use the best and most “honest” items on their children.
“When I became a mom, I finally became the person I am, that I always should have been. It’s the most satisfying job in the world,” Alba says. “But, it can also be overwhelming and confusing. I created The Honest Company to help moms and to give all children a better, safer start.”
In March, Rodale will publish her first book, The Honest Life, a guide to natural and non-toxic living.
Elon Musk is the CEO and Product Architect of Tesla Motors and the CEO/CTO of Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX). At SpaceX, Elon is the chief designer, overseeing development of rockets and spacecraft for missions to Earth orbit and ultimately to other planets.
At Tesla, Elon has overseen product development and design from the beginning, including the all electric Tesla Roadster, Model S and Model X. Transitioning to a sustainable energy economy, in which electric vehicles play a pivotal role, has been one of his central interests for almost two decades, stemming from his time as a physics student working on ultracapacitors in Silicon Valley.
In addition, Elon is the non-executive chairman and principal shareholder of SolarCity, which he helped create. SolarCity is now the leading provider of solar power systems in the United States. Prior to SpaceX, Elon co-founded PayPal, the world’s leading Internet payment system, and served as the company’s Chairman and CEO.
Kelly Chapman Meyer, passionate environmentalist and health advocate, is a Trustee of the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) where she recently organized NRDC’s “Making Peace with the Ocean” with her co-chairs, which raised over $3 million to celebrate and raise awareness for our oceans. As co-founder of the Women’s Cancer Research Fund, a program of the Entertainment Industry Foundation, she has helped raise over $40 million for ground breaking Bio-Marker research and medical institutions.
She most recently co-founded the American Heart Association’s “Teaching Gardens,” which strives to eliminate childhood obesity by integrating nutrition and fitness into schools. Meyer is currently focused on launching and expanding Teaching Gardens into 1,000 schools within the next two years. Her goal is to introduce organic gardening along with a nutritional curriculum and connection to fitness; the hope is to re-establish what it means to be healthy for the next generation.
She is a board member of Heal the Bay and worked to help pass the Environmental Education Initiative, which provides environmental education for all children in the state of California, K – 12. In 2008, she partnered to build the first LEED Platinum home in California that was used to educate the public on Green building and raise money for environmental causes. She recently supported the implementation of the Marine Life Preserve Area (MLPA) off the coast of Southern California.
